Level 1

(Beginner) Can demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the discipline of design research.

Level 2

(Novice) Is learning the practice of how to conduct and collate generative design research and other evidence-based investigation techniques, with support and guidance from colleagues.

  • Shadowed a more experienced colleague conducting a generative research technique

  • Took notes or provided active support for a more experienced colleague conducting generative research (e.g. logistics & setup, recruitment coordination)

  • Shadowed a more experienced colleague in the process of synthesising generative research insights

  • Participated in the synthesis of generative research, alongside a more experienced colleague

  • Trial ran a few tasks or activities from a generative research phase, under guidance from a more experienced colleague

  • Demonstrated evidence of the generative design research process and artefacts / outputs (e.g. presentation, talk, sharing of evidence in a presentation and/or 1-to-1)

Level 3

(Intermediate) Can conduct a variety of primary research into the client’s target audiences and business domain, to help reveal potential challenges.

Level 4

(Expert) Can confidently diagnose key client opportunities by synthesising evidence efficiently and effectively, including those provided by secondary research.

Level 5

(Master) Can weave compelling narratives around insights, provided from a wide variety of disparate sources of evidence.
